Not the first Fed. appt. by any stretch, but I think it's perfect that Amanda Simpson is the first recognized transgender appointment made by a presidential administration. Her resume is amazing and flawless. She is exactly right for her position. If this was a political move it was brilliant.
But I don't think it was political.
The White House didn't comment on it. They have transgender employees, even appointees in other depts (Dept. Commerce was the first) and the most significant reason is that they have quietly changed the language on the federal employment website to include discrimination based on gender identity.
Pres. Obama is getting it done. It's not fast and flashly. But probably fast and flashly won't work. One step at a time. I'm happy with one step at a time. Amanda Simpson is a good step.
